Can You Do Self-Driving Trips in Mongolia Independently?

Mongolia is vast, spanning over 1.5 million square kilometers and stretching 2,392 km from west to east and 1,259 km from north to south. While the main provincial capitals are linked by paved roads, much of the country is made up of rough, unpaved roads and challenging terrain. There are long distances between popular attractions, which can make traveling around the country a bit tiring for tourists. However, these rugged conditions are fueling the rise of self-driving tourism in Mongolia, and the sector is growing rapidly.

One of the biggest draws for self-driving trips in Mongolia is the freedom it offers. With such expansive territory, you’ll have plenty of room to explore on your own terms. Not only can you bring your own vehicle into the country, but you can also rent cars, motorcycles, or even off-road vehicles. Rental companies offer a range of options, including vehicles with or without a driver, as well as services like guides, cooks, and mechanics to make your journey smoother. Some tours even give you the opportunity to buy a motorcycle, ride it for your trip, and then donate or sell it to locals at a lower price once you’re done.

If you’re thinking about renting a vehicle and setting off on a self-driving adventure in Mongolia, here’s what you need to know about the required documentation and regulations for driving there. Driver’s license requirements for Self-driving in Mongolia

If you’re planning to drive in Mongolia and hold a valid driver’s license from a country that’s a member of the Vienna Convention, you’re in luck, you can obtain a Mongolian national driving license without needing to take a driving test. Here’s how you can get it:

  1. Complete the driver’s registration form: You’ll need to fill out this form in person at the service hall.
  2. Identity documentation: Bring your passport or identity card, along with a copy of it. If you’re using a foreign passport, you may also need to provide a reference.
  3. National driver’s license: Bring the original driver’s license from your home country, as well as a certified translation of it into Mongolian.
  4. Photos: You’ll need two passport-sized photos (4×6 cm).
  5. Medical certificate: A health check-up is required. Head to a district health center and complete the Health Checkup Form EMM-34B.
  6. Payment receipt: The fee for the driver’s license is 12,500 MNT. You’ll need to make the payment to the following bank account:
    • Account Number: 100900012520
    • Recipient Bank: State Finance Bank
    • Recipient Organization: National Police Agency, Driver’s License Income
    • Payment Reference: Your full name and registration number.

Note: If you’re a foreign citizen, you can drive in Mongolia for up to one year with your valid foreign license that complies with the Vienna Convention.

INSURANCE

In Mongolia, there are two types of insurance related to motor vehicles: Vehicle insurance and Mandatory liability insurance for drivers. For the vehicles rented by our company, we have provided 100% accident insurance, which covers any damage caused to the vehicle. This insurance is designed to compensate for damage to the vehicle resulting from accidents.

SPEED LIMIT

According to Section 9.3 of the Mongolian Road Traffic Safety Rules, the typical maximum speed limit in urban areas is 60 km /h, 80 km/ h on provincial roads and 100 km/ h on highways. Drivers are required to obey these speed limits and not exceed them.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Question 1: Do you only rent cars from Ulaanbaatar?
No, we can arrange for your rental car to be delivered anywhere in Mongolia at a time that works for you. If you’d like the car to be delivered from Ulaanbaatar to your preferred location, there will be additional charges for fuel, the driver’s salary, meals, and accommodation.

Question 2: Can I rent a car without a support vehicle or mechanic?
Yes, but we require an additional deposit in this case. If you’re renting three or more cars, we recommend having a support vehicle and mechanic along, especially for long trips. A mechanic can help prevent breakdowns, and if something does go wrong, the mechanic’s car can keep you on the move while your vehicle is being repaired.

Question 3: What if I get a flat tire on my motorcycle? Do you provide any tools?
Most of our motorcycles have mousse tires, so there’s no need to worry about flats. For those with inner tubes, we provide a replacement tube and air pump just in case. We also supply any other necessary tools for your trip.

Question 4: How do I get a driver’s license?
You’ll need an international driving license and a motorcycle license when you sign the contract. If you’re from a country that isn’t a signatory to the Vienna Convention, we can help you get a temporary Mongolian driving permit for both vehicles and motorcycles. If you need a temporary permit, you’ll also have to take a 20-question test.

Question 5: What’s included in the car rental price?
Here’s what you can expect when you rent a car:

Included:

  • 4X4 vehicle
  • Vehicle insurance
  • Tent (1)
  • Camping table (1)
  • Camping chairs (2)
  • Camping utensils (1 box)
